 Brain Waves

Many sports athletes strive hard to get in that state because it’s the state where constant creativity and optimal performance takes place.


This is the mental zone where the world around slows, skills become automated to allow fine adjustments and elite performance to flow.

So how can we recreate this ‘state of flow’?


1. Train the brain to 'drop into' the 'performance zone'.

1. Train the brain

Neuro-sports uses  science and technology to assess brain patterns (electroencephalograph or EEG) to develop techniques to improve skill acquisition and delivery in those critical moments of competition.


Previously technologies were lab based and cumbersome. No using new technologies these research techniques can be used in Virtual Reality and most importantly the field of play. Modile wearable tech with real time bluetooth linkage to handset or phone provides simple interactive platform for the coach and athlete to open up objective and biometric methods of skill acquisition and refinement.

How can Neuro-Sports train different brain wave patterns to achieve flow or enter the zone?


First we need to understand the science.

Learning New Skills

In  sports performance we start out with beta brain waves to learn and process new skills. Then quickly move into alpha and eventually theta patterns when the so called muscle memory occurs.


Performing under pressure. Being in the Zone'

The flow state / ‘in the zone’ is achieved through our brains functioning at a specific brain pattern / frequency.

This is  called the Alpha-Theta Brain Wave Border where you are in the middle of your conscious and subconscious mind. It as if the world has slowed almost as if in the movie 'Matrix'. Thus perception of slowed time allows athletes to perform efficient movement and precise reactions to a complex environment or skill.

Neuro-Sports offers multiple strategies, these include

Modulation of existing training or new performance enhanced training whilst wearing monitoring devices. In the same way as you might monitor heart rate, speed or power. Using Neural Feedback training regimes can be optimised to the individual athlete to prepare athletes for the pressure moments.

2. Neural plasticity

Neuro-sports believes that 'muscle memory', as described by many, is more a process of neural plasticity and ambient brain wave processing(cognition).

3. Nerve Flow

To support the brain and nerves we have to support the neurotransmitters implicated in attaining the Zone State.


These are:

Dopamine – When you first enter into flow, dopamine floods your brain. It increases attention, information flow, and pattern recognition. It is essentially a skill booster.

Norepinephrine – This speeds up heart rate, muscle tension, and respiration. It triggers a glucose response so we have more energy; increasing arousal, attention, neural efficiency, and emotional control thus producing a high.

Endorphins – Rooting from the word “endogenous,” meaning naturally internal to the body, endorphins relieve pain and induce pleasure. They function similarly to opioids. However, the feeling attainted from endorphins is up to 100 times more powerful than morphine.

Anandamide – Stemming from the Sanskrit word for “bliss,” Anandamide is an endogenous cannabinoid and feels similar to the psychoactive effect found in marijuana. Anandamide is released in exercise-induced flow states and elevates mood, relieves pain, dilates blood vessels, and aids in respiration. It has also been proven to amplify lateral thinking – the ability to link disparate ideas together.

Serotonin – At the end of a flow state, serotonin fills the brain producing an “after-glow” effect. This leaves you with a post-exercise feeling of bliss and is only felt once the flow state has already come and gone.

Application in Football

The Goalkeeper

Advances in technology, sports science and neurosciences has allowed neuro-sports-institute to design efficient and innovating sport training paradigms and technologies for training and the field of play.


Neuro-Sports is at the forefront of using NeuroFeedback (NF). Facilitating athletes to  self- regulate specific brain rhythms and consequently improve their performances.


Neuro-sports studies with elite level soccer goalkeepers has convcentrated on the central focus whilst retaining peripheral awareness. This is scientifically called Covert Visual Spatial Attention (CVSA).  This is achieved through the ambient brain patterns associated with being in the zone where there is a Top Down Modeling of the sports arena. As suggested this is a brain derived process where cognition of the field of play is achieved and allows multiple objects to be tracked and assigned to a 3 dimentional awareness of the field of play.


Nearly all field sports players use this to track a primary object whilst retaining a brain map of what is happening in the periphery and paracentral areas of vision.

A secondary project using biosensors, brain wave analysis and eye tracking in VR and on teh field of play has offered insights into the process of saving penalties and penalty taking.

Firstly  : The goal keepers

1. prediction success using early visual cues prior to the penalty being struck.

This illustrates the neurological basis of skill acquisition and performinng under pressure that is believed to be true all soccer players, American Football, Basketball, Golf and most other sports.

Further investigations are indicated to refine the techniques and training opportunities for specific sports and indivual athletes within the sports.


Elite athletes possess neural processes such as CVSA far in excess of the lower league or recreational players.


Those players that perform underpressure retain these neuro and brain functions such as  CVSA whilst it breaks down in players who choke under pressure.

The use of brain wave management serves to improve the performance at those most critical times. This might be at the

penalty in soccer,

the match point in tennis,

the free thow in basketball,

the big money putt in golf,

and most other sports you can think of. The foundation of success in sports is centred on teh brain and nerves.


The skill of CSVA or performing under-pressure can be learned through 'focus' sensory nerve noise reduction, entering a flow state or 'getting in the zone'. These can be achieved through,

practicing under pressure,

visual rehearsal and 'quiet eye' focus

Biosensory markers allow the coach and athlet to recognise these objective measures atht allow sporting success.

We looked for Electroencephalography (EEG) markers of CVSA usable for virtual reality-based NF training procedures, i.e., markers that comply with the following criteria:


(1) specific to CVSA,

(2) detectable in real-time and

(3) related to goalkeepers’ performance/ expertise.


Our work has  revealed that the best-known EEG marker of CVSA—increased α-power ipsilateral to the attended hemi-field—we highlighted a significant positive correlation between athletes’ improvement in CVSA abilities and the increase of their α-power at rest.


 This result suggests that it may be possible to design innovative ecological training procedures for goalkeepers, for instance using a combination of NF and cognitive tasks performed in virtual reality.
